  4. Jan 11, 2012 About a week after I stopped taking it I had a wicked flare. Fever, more neurological symptoms, totally wiped out, and horrible joint pain. It's been a little over a week since I started again and I actually managed to finally get Christmas down AND cook dinner. Wow, right? I can't say for sure it was the plaquenil, but it does make me hopeful.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus. The symptoms of an allergic reaction may include an asthma attack, facial swelling, skin rash or hay fever. Ask your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking Plaquenil while you are pregnant.

Let me tell you what weaning down from Plaquenil is like. Plaquenil isn a antiparasitic drug with anti-inflammatory affect. I have done a lot of research on this drug and haven't run into anybody who has complained of the withdrawal effect. Over the years on this site we have had quite a few people post that they didn't think that the plaquenil was working so they would stop taking it.
